Looking to the future: Security Industry in 2012

This is a very challenging, but exciting, time for the security industry.  On the challenging side we have security threats, from terrorism to malicious activism, increasing in size and scope, which the major events of next year can only complicate.  Making the environment more complex we have a Government which finds that its resources are over-stretched through commitments at home and abroad, while the overarching need to reduce the budget deficit while not stunting growth affects every decision it makes.

It would be misguided to suggest that a single security product can mitigate these threats so an integrated approach, incorporating well trained and motivated people and a range of technology solutions, will be paramount. We believe the former is currently well catered for by the SIA’s regulatory regime, which although in the process of changing is transitional and will not impact next year’s events. On the latter front, we believe technology is enhanced through an integrated approach: often delivering results greater than the sum of its parts. Therefore providers need to continue to integrate a comprehensive range of products and solutions, including access control, CCTV, biometrics, perimeter fencing and turnstiles amongst others, to provide a holistic view of risk mitigation.

Finally in 2012 we think the security industry needs to move on from the manpower versus technology debate: overlaying technology solutions with security officers, or vice versa, can bring immediate cost and performance benefits: replacing some of officers more ‘routine’ tasks with technology, releases them to concentrate on other areas where the threats are more fluid and require levels of intuition which cannot be replicated by current technological alternatives.
